Copy Edit or Line Edit

General Overview

This focuses on individual sentences and paragraphs and takes a much closer view of your book. This will be a two-pass read of the manuscript that includes an editorial letter and comments marked in track changes in your manuscript. 

Typically, a copy edit will include an editorial letter that will run one to three pages in length, a style sheet, and comments made inside your manuscript in Track Changes. 

The Nitty Gritty Details

The copyediting phase includes:

  •  Sentence and paragraph structure
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Spelling
  • Word usage
  • Awkward sentence structure
  • Unnecessary repetition
  • Crutch words
  • Flagging clichés or other prose-related issues
  • Dialogue issues
  • Word choice
  • Incorrect facts
  • Anomalies
  • Glaring typos
  • Continuity/plot flaws

Style sheet includes:

  • Punctuation
  • Numbers
  • Spellings
  • List of characters
  • List of places
  • Timeline of events

I will make sure your manuscript isn’t riddled with bad grammar, spelling mistakes, glaring typos, or embarrassing inconsistencies.

I will also follow the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) guidelines. 

Does not include:

  • Big-picture issues such as plot, characterization, or pacing
  • Formatting
